WI News November 2016

HOLMER

Holmer's Annual Meeting was held at the beginning of November. Our re-elected President, Jenny Hare, spoke about the many, varied and exciting happenings which took place during the last year - the 75th since our WI's inauguration.  After a delicious two course meal  and a chance for members to vote for our WI motto for 2017, we all enjoyed a beetle drive. Somewhat chaotic and excellent fun!

Recently,  we had a lovely walk around Queenswood , followed by lunch. Just as the last mouthful had been consumed , the heavens opened with the full fury of a violent thunderstorm! We made it to our cars with seconds to spare!

Margaret Powell kindly organised another skittles evening in the Golden Lion , Grandstand Road. Once again, Paula, the landlady, catered for us brilliantly. Where else could you get sausage, chips and bread and butter for £1? She even sorted out some veggie sausages for our non-meat eater. After a keenly contested competition, medals were awarded to the winning lady, Jane Jenkins and the winning man, Nathan O'Grady.

Other recent outings include:- a visit to Winchcombe and Sudeley Castle, a visit to a silk enterprise in Tewkesbury and a fashion show in Sutton.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 7th December at 7.30pm in St. Mary's church , Grandstand Road. This will be our Christmas party evening with a festive performance , a Christmas Draw and a Christmas Bring and Buy. Also, two of our newest members are going to show us how to make Christmas crackers.   We still have one or two spaces left! Our membership is increasingly covering a very broad spectrum of ages , ranging from  folk in their twenties to those of a rather more mature nature ( we're all 21 really!). Anyway, take a note of the date and come along and join us!

THE SUTTONS

In October, The Suttons WI heard from Kenneth Reeve about his experiences as a WW2 Evacuee. In November, we will have our Annual Meeting. Our speaker will be David Hill and the title of his talk is Lost in Hereford.

STAUNTON ON ARROW

Lisa Fisher's talk was entitled ‘Empowering with Colour’. Lisa has a business where she performs colour analysis for people to enable them to buy the correct colour clothes to suit their complexion and body shape. She encouraged us to go through our wardrobes and get rid of clothes we do not wear!  Apparently we wear 15% of our clothes 85% of the time. She had much good advice on our clothes and getting value for money from them, style, accessories, etc. and we all found her very interesting.  She left us information about her various workshops.

WYE WOMEN

The Wye Women sewing group have completed our tablecloth. We presented it to our members at our annual meeting. We have sewn various ideas connected to our city WI, and all present members have embroidered their signatures.

ALMELEY

Almeley were delighted to welcome Rebecca Edmonds last month. She gave us really inspirational talk on Clinical Hypnotherapy and the wonderful affects it can have.  She ended her talk with 10 minutes of calm and relaxation which all the members really appreciated.  We would recommend her as a fascinating speaker.

SALTMARSHE & DISTRICT

At the Annual Meeting the Treasurer raised a laugh or two with witty comments included in her Accounts for the past year but Wendy, as ever, gained plaudits for her rendition from the Chair doing her whole Report in rhyme !

Norma gave us some effective ideas for Christmas, in the way of craft - worked decorations. Her kit included glue, glitter, elastic bands, hairspray, cocktail sticks, plenty of ribbon, candles and collection of greenery from her own garden. Norma always manages to make everything look so very easy and the finished baubles, candles and table decorations were most effective and pleasing. Our picture shows Rachel bravely attempting to reproduce a ribbon bow under the watchful eye of Norma.

Our year concludes with our Christmas Lunch: this year being held at Upper Sapey Golf Club on Friday December 9th meeting there at 12 noon.

SPARKLING WYE

The AGM was followed by cheese tasting.  A selection of delicious cheeses plus tasting notes had been put together by Truffles Delicatessen and there was local perry, crackers and grapes to accompany the cheeses. Members enjoyed the opportunity to chat as they tasted. The evening closed with coffee and biscuits.

UPTON BISHOP

After the AGM members took part in a fun quiz including a picture round and Royal questions, presented by Ann and Jacqui which everyone enjoyed; the winning team was given their prizes and the losing team their wooden spoons. Every team received chocolate Santas.

LEDBURY

After the AGM in November members had a fun time making their hats in preparation for the Christmas party in December.   Mary Stuart instructed us on an ingenious method of making them from old Christmas cards with the aid of a stapler.    The result was a great selection of brightly coloured hats which fitted all sizes of heads and really looked quite fetching!

For this month’s competition, members brought a wonderful selection of  old family photographs.   Entries are voted for using coins, with the proceeds going to the ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World) a charity which offers mutual support, friendship and practical help to women and communities around the world.

The next meeting will be a Christmas Celebration at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 14 December  at the Parish Room of the Catholic Church New Street Ledbury HR8 2EE.

BRAMPTON BRYAN

Lucky members of Brampton Bryan WI enjoyed a visit to Hereford Museum’s Resource Centre to see wonderfully preserved textiles, ranging from gold-thread embroidered Regency waistcoats to charming sun bonnets made of printed cotton, and a tiny pair of baby’s boots made of red leather, which had obviously been so loved that the toe had been poked out! We hope to return to see more of the contents of this treasure-house of Herefordshire’s history.

PETERSTOW

November is the month of our Annual General Meeting. Our Secretary, Margaret Phillips resigned her position, having served on the committee for several years in different posts, we wish her well.

Two of our members arranged a Christmas table with many gifts suitable for the forthcoming celebrations.

A quiz was arranged by Jenny Holmes, with the members being totally engrossed in the problems to be solved.
Our meeting closed with a delicious tea provided by the committee.

STOKE PRIOR & DISTRICT

Jane Davey gave the world premiere of her new talk, A Scandinavian Seasonal talk together with fabulous slides. We were joined by four visitors and everyone really enjoyed the afternoon. She gives talks on cruise ships and is off again in January.

CITY GROUP

On the evening of 17th October Tupsley hosted City Group Meeting at St John’s Hall. The meeting was well attended with 70 ladies seated from six Institutes. After a lovely meal of soup and dessert the guest speaker Reg Moule spoke knowledgeably on his favourite subject and how he became qualified and interested in anything related to gardening.  Members’ questions were fully answered, and given half a chance, we could have spent another hour questioning and listening to him.

BOSBURY

At the AM Isabel was re-elected President with Sue Sharples Secretary, and a new treasurer, Frances-Jane Grey.  We were pleased to welcome three new members to committee, Rosemary Bayles, Catherine Fox, and Helen Poulton.  Isabel thanked the committee for their hard work during the year and especially Judith the retiring treasurer.

It has been an eventful year with talks ranging from Birds of Prey to How to Make a Fascinator.  The Craft and Produce Show in October had a record number of entries.

We will be taking a stall at the Christmas Fair in the Parish Hall on Saturday, 10th December selling biscuits, and preserves.

New members are always welcome for further information please phone 640029.
