HOLMER

At our July meeting, Raj Papps, one of our members, led us all in a very relaxing yoga session. Our speaker was Sandy Elliot, illustrator for the Very Reverend Michael Tavinor's book 'Saints and Sinners'.  Sandy spoke about a few of the 366 stories in the book, which were enhanced by enlargements of her original drawings.

CRADLEY

Cradley WI President Cherril Watkins presenting a cheque to Sue Coleman, Chief Executive of Hereford’s Women’s Refuge (West Mercia Women’s Aid) at their July Garden Meeting.

PETERSTOW

This month our guest speaker was Alisdair Nualls, a member of the Marine Conservation Society. It was a lively and entertaining afternoon with him involving several members in a question and answer session.

Alisdair explained in detail the different aspects of the society’s work, the aims they hope to achieve namely to clean beaches and coastline, protect marine areas of the sea and finally for the general public to buy sustainable fish.

Our speaker brought leaflets for the members to take. His enthusiasm for his work was infectious as a result several ladies considered joining the society. We finished as usual with a delicious tea.

STOKE PRIOR

Stoke Prior had front page photos in the Leominster News. Plus an article inside the magazine.

LEDBURY GROUP MEETING

Very many thanks to those who came along to our Ledbury Group meeting.  We say meeting, but it felt very much like a party in the Colwall Ale House Festival marquee – beautifully decorated by our home-grown MCS admin Ann Baker with her wonderful bunting.

We were so lucky to have the opportunity of using the marquee (of course the weather helped!) - with plenty of space to mingle or enjoy the seated area outside – thankfully in the shade with a cool breeze blowing.  Wonderful also to be able to support and contribute to the Colwall Ale House Festival.

Committee members and other WINGS members stepped up and helped set up, decorate and await our guests.  The principle one of course was Helen Stace of Colwall Orchard Group who gave the most wonderful potted history of Colwall Orchards … such a shame so many disappeared but, with thanks to the Colwall Orchard Group are now reappearing and going from strength to strength.

Details of Helen’s talk can be found here http://colwallorchardgroup.org/calendar/all%20about%20orchards%20-%207th%20july%202018.html but you need to hear Helen speak to get the real picture … a speaker for your next programme perhaps?

This was our first WINGS Ledbury Group meeting – good luck to Putley WI for their turn next year. With HUGE thanks to Ledbury, Mathon, Bosbury and Cradley for coming along and making our evening truly special.  We were delighted to welcome two members from Wye Women WI who we had only recently met at the HFWI fundraiser with a talk from Charles Hanson.  They were made most welcome.  And of course Colwall WINGS members joined in the fun too!

Another highlight was our Ballard Cup competition – won by (aforementioned Ann Baker) for her delightful basket of fruit pin cushions.  But thanks to everyone who took part .. .some great entries …

STOKE PRIOR & DISTRICT

At their July meeting, Stoke Prior & District WI learnt the advantages of wearing the right colours that suit you best, when they welcomed Lisa Fisher as their speaker. They found that packing just 16 items in your holiday suitcase can make 125 different outfits. We all went home spurred on to make changes in the future.

SALTMARSHE & DISTRICT

We were mesmerised by Angela Hugman’s talk about Shopping and Marketing in Qatar where Angela had lived for six years thirty years ago. In Qatar the weather is hot or very hot; winters are in the 70s and summer in the 100s plus, with high humidity. Tales of coping with weevils, ants and all manner of creepy things; learning when shops opened during Ramadan – marked by cannon sound; and being advised of useful tips like “keep your make up in the fridge” had us listening with amusement.

The fun carried over to our tea and biscuits section

Our competition for the evening was a thimble and several drew our attention by their age and decoration.

MUCH COWARNE

Much Cowarne WI enjoyed their evening meeting on June 9th trying desperately to keep up with Tina Webster's Belly Dancing demonstration along with audience  participation.July meeting was our annual garden party. This year we booked at Holloways, as our president was unable to provide the venue. A wonderful afternoon tea was enjoyed by all. Freda our Vice President kept the business to a minimum covering all outings in the newsletter diary of events.

LEDBURY

On a warm July evening John Barron told us about his herd of pedigree jersey cattle at Beacon Hill Farm Bosbury – “Johnsjerseys”.   His unpasteurised milk, cream, ice-cream and cheese is sold at the farm and mail order.
Members enjoyed samples of his delicious cream with strawberries and sparkling elderflower.  Very Wimbledon!
Our President Margaret Coulson was congratulated on organising a most successful outing to Grey’s Court, home of Lady Brunner.

ALLENSMORE

In July, Allensmore W.I. were treated to an excellent talk and slideshow given by Paul Morrisroe entitled ‘Wheels on the Western Front’.  This was not about  battles of WW1 (as some of us might have expected) but about a series of three charity bike rides taking in the WW1 memorials and war graves in France and Belgium.  Paul had organised these events himself and the third one will take place in August this year.  It will celebrate 100 years since the end of WW1.  These bike rides all raise money  for The Army Benevolent Fund.  His first two rides raised over £100,000 pounds each and the third one, with 50+ entrants, looks set to do the same.   His talk was informative and interesting and we all wished him the best of luck with his upcoming event.
On August 9th our talk will be given by the Co-Op financial advisor entitled ‘Tax, Care and Toy Boy’.

BRAMPTON BRYAN

An evening of Peruvian Culture and Costume with Jilll Salmons. We were informed about this fascinating and diverse country, fabrics and costume that differed by village; what a collection she brought with her. We had the opportunity to view and touch the materials, try on outfits and hats……. So many hats! What a joy to have such a relaxed and informed speaker.

STAUNTON ON ARROW

Staunton on Arrow WI welcomed our own Diane Sawyer who had stepped in at short notice to give an interesting talk and very talented demonstration of Encaustic Art.  Members and friends also had a fascinating and worthwhile tour round Moorcourt Farm,  hosted by the Price family, explaining how they grow such wonderful cherries.
